Final 32 Bit Release of Respondus LockDown Browser for Windows

Updated: February 2026

Respondus has released LockDown Browser for Windows, version 2.1.3.08 and confirmed that this will be the last 32 bit version of the application. Students using older, 32 bit Windows systems can continue using version 2.1.3.08 for now. However, support for this version will be phased out in the coming months, and no future updates, improvements, or security patches will be provided for 32 bit devices. To ensure continued compatibility, students will ultimately need to upgrade their operating system to a supported 64 bit version of Windows.

Why This Matters

Upgrading to a modern, 64 bit Windows operating system ensures:

  • Enhanced security: Future security fixes and patches for LockDown Browser will be released only for 64 bit Windows environments, helping protect student devices during secure testing.
  • Improved reliability: New Respondus features, stability updates, and bug fixes will no longer be developed for 32 bit systems, meaning outdated devices may experience errors or degraded performance over time.
  • Ongoing compatibility: As Respondus phases out support for version 2.1.3.08, students remaining on 32 bit systems may encounter access issues when launching or updating LockDown Browser.

What Students Should Do

  • Check your Windows version: Students should confirm whether their device is running a 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows. Instructions are available via the Windows Settings > System > About panel.
    • If your device is 64 bit: No action is needed beyond keeping Respondus LockDown Browser up to date. Existing installations of the new version (2.1.3.08) will auto update.
    • If your device is 32 bit: You may continue using version 2.1.3.08 for the short term, however, Respondus will no longer produce updates for 32 bit systems, and Respondus may no longer be usable on your device. You should begin planning to upgrade your operating system or transition to a newer device to ensure uninterrupted access to secure assessments.
