Microsoft 365 Companion Apps for Windows 11

Microsoft will begin automatically installing Microsoft 365 Companion apps on Windows 11 devices that already have Microsoft 365 desktop apps in October 2025. These new tools are designed to help Windows 11 users work smarter and faster—right from their desktop.

What are Microsoft Companion Apps?

Microsoft 365 Companion apps are lightweight tools that sit on your Windows 11 taskbar and give you quick access to essential productivity features. Think of them as shortcuts to the things you use most—without needing to open full apps.

Here's what's included:

  • People Companion: Quickly find colleagues, see who's in your meetings, and pin frequent collaborators to streamline communication.
  • File Search Companion: Instantly locate your Microsoft 365 files, preview them, and share with others—all without opening Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
  • Calendar Companion: View upcoming meetings, join calls, and search your schedule directly from the taskbar.

These apps are powered by Microsoft Graph, which means they're smart enough to surface relevant information based on your work patterns—making your day more efficient and less cluttered.

How Will the Microsoft Companion Apps be Installed?

If your device runs Windows 11 and has Microsoft 365 desktop apps, the Companion apps will be installed automatically as part of a Microsoft 365 update. No action is required on your part. The installation happens quietly in the background and won’t interrupt your work.

Why Does this Enhancement Mean for You?

Whether you're a student, faculty member, or staff, these apps are designed to help you:

  • Save time by reducing clicks and app-switching.
  • Stay organized with instant access to your calendar and files.
  • Collaborate more easily with people you work with most.
