Advisory for Mac Users:

Sequoia OS Introduces Private Wi-Fi Address Feature which May Conflict with University of Miami Network Access

September 2024

Mac's latest operating system (OS), Sequoia, introduces a new feature that automatically turns on Private Wi-Fi Address—which changes a devices' Wi-Fi configuration that may result in hindering access to the University of Miami's secure Wi-Fi networks, such as CaneNet Wireless (for students), UMiamiWireless (for Coral Gables/Marine faculty and staff), and SecureCanes (for UHealth/MSOM faculty and staff).

If your Mac OS device cannot join the University of Miami's secure Wi-Fi network, try turning off the Private Wi-Fi Address feature to fix the issue. Step-by-step instructions are noted below.

How to Turn Off the Private Wi-Fi Address Feature

iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Vision Pro

Requires iOS 14, iPad OS 14, Vision OS, or later.

  1. Open the Settings app, then tap Wi-Fi.

  2. If you are not currently connected to the network, tap Edit in the upper-right corner of the screen.

  3. Tap the More Info button next to the network name.

  4. If using iOS 18, iPadOS 18, VisionOS 2, or later, tap Private Wi-Fi Address, then tap Off. Alternatively, if using an earlier OS, turn Private Wi-Fi Address off.

Mac

Requires Mac OS Sequoia or later.

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Wi-Fi in the sidebar.

  2. Click the Details button or More Info button next to the network name.

  3. From the menu next to Private Wi-Fi Address, choose Off.

Apple Watch

Requires Apple Watch OS 7 or later.

  1. Open the Settings app, then tap Wi-Fi.

  2. Tap the name of the network. If you are not currently connected to the network, swipe left on its name and tap the More Info button.

  3. If using watchOS 11 or later, scroll down and tap Off. Alternatively, if using an earlier version of watchOS, turn Private Address off.
