Advisory for Students:
Changes to Your IT Services Access After Graduation

Before you head off on your next adventure, we wanted to share some information about your access to IT services after you leave the University of Miami.

After graduation, you will keep access to:

  • Your email address! As an alum, your UM email account (name@miami.edu) will remain active as long as you log in at least once a year. If you'd like to have your @miami.edu emails automatically forwarded to another email address, remember to keep your account active by logging in at email.miami.edu at least once per year¹.
  • CaneLink: your CaneLink account will stay active for actions like viewing your academic history or requesting transcripts.

However, access to the following services will expire 30-days after you graduate:

  • O365 tools such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, and Skype². If you'd like to continue to use these tools, the following options are available to you:

    • Purchase O365 Email and Tools for Download/Desktop Use
To purchase O365 tools – such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, and Skype – for personal use, please visit: products.office.com. Once purchased, you can download these products directly to your computer's desktop. (Note: you can use these O365 products even when you're offline).

    • Create a Free Outlook.com Email and Use O365 Tools Online
Visit outlook.live.com to create a free Outlook.com email account. With your free account, you get access to the online-version of O365 tools – such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, and Skype. (Note: the free versions of O365 tools are only accessible via an online browser – no desktop download options are provided.)
Important: Please export any files you would like to keep from the following UM services – including Box, Google Drive, OneDrive, Adobe Creative Cloud, etc. – before your graduation date.

If you have any questions, please contact the UMIT Service Desk at: (305) 284-6565 or help@miami.edu.

Thank you,

University of Miami Information Technology (UMIT)

¹ If you do not plan to continue using your UM email account and would like to keep a copy of your emails, please feel free to export your emails (i.e., by forwarding messages to your personal email account).

² Due to licensing restrictions, the full UM enterprise O365 license is limited to active UM faculty, staff, and students only.
