Important Information Regarding UM-managed Devices and Our Wireless Networks

The University of Miami (UM) is committed to maintaining a highly reliable and resilient network environment for all. As part of this commitment, IT routinely assesses the cybersecurity landscape to ensure our technology configurations are aligned with world-class configuration standards.

In support of our goal of providing a highly reliable and resilient wireless network service, as of June 1, 2025, UM-managed devices are restricted from accessing the unsecured, visitor Wi-Fi network known as CanesGuest.

If you experience any issues connecting to UMiamiWireless or SecureCanes, please contact the IT Service Desk, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Requirements for Accessing the On Campus Private Networks, UMiamiWireless or SecureCanes

As shared via email with all University of Miami (UM) community members, in 2024, the University implemented network access control (NAC), a new technology solution at the Coral Gables and Marine campuses. This change is designed to ensure that only properly secured devices can access our private wireless or wired networks, UMiamiWireless or SecureCanes.

Key Points to Remember:

  • No Action Required: NAC has already been enabled, and there is no action needed on your part.
  • Access: Only properly secured devices can log in to UMiamiWireless or SecureCanes.
  • Alternative Connection: You can still connect to the internet instantly via our public CanesGuest wireless network. Connecting devices to the UMiamiWireless or SecureCanes networks is optional.
  • New Computers: Any new devices, such as computers and laptops, attempting to connect to UMiamiWireless or SecureCanes must be issued by the University. Non-UM-issued devices can connect to the internet instantly via our public CanesGuest wireless network.
  • Mobile Devices: iPhones, iPads, and Android devices that have not recently connected to UMiamiWireless or SecureCanes will need to be enrolled in mobile device management (MDM) to connect to UMiamiWireless or SecureCanes. If you choose not to enroll in MDM, you can connect to the internet instantly via our public CanesGuest wireless network.
