  • What is CLEAR?

CLEAR is an identity verification solution that provides a secure way to confirm your identity.

You likely have noticed CLEAR is used for airport security across the nation. At the University of Miami, a separate version of CLEAR—created specifically for organizations—is available to reset your password.

  • Why CLEAR?

CLEAR started nearly 15 years ago in the most highly regulated environment—airports—and has over 30 million members* and a network of partners who trust CLEAR to make experiences safer and easier. (*Membership totals as of April 2025.)

Through the CLEAR verification process, we further secure the password reset process by reducing the risk of social engineering and other phishing attacks that aim to compromise sensitive personal information.

  • Who is eligible to use CLEAR?

All users with a valid government-issued photo ID and mobile phone number.

  • Do I need to download the CLEAR app to verify my identity?

No, verification is completed within a secure Internet browser.

  • Does University of Miami have access to all my data in CLEAR?

No. As part of your enrollment in CLEAR for University of Miami password reset, you will be asked to consent to share very limited information that does not include your biometrics and/or any usage history.

  • What personal or biometric data (e.g., ID, selfie, facial scan) will be collected when using clear?

CLEAR collects and stores biometric data—specifically, a selfie—to verify an individual's identity. The personally identifiable information (PII) collected depends on the specific enrollment flow. For the University of Miami, that includes the data listed on the consent screen: basic information from a government-issued ID (eg name, date of birth) as well as phone number, email and selfie.

Before any data is collected, users are clearly informed of what information is being captured and must provide explicit consent to share it. Biometric data (such as facial images used for matching) is processed and stored solely by CLEAR, not by University of Miami or any partner organization. CLEAR acts as the secure biometric controller, ensuring biometric data never touches partner systems.

As a data controller, all users who enroll in CLEAR agree to CLEAR's Members Terms and Privacy Policy. Below is an example of the consent screen that every University of Miami user agrees to when registering with CLEAR:

  • Where will the data be stored (University vs. CLEAR servers), and for how long?

All data collected through CLEAR is securely stored in CLEAR's cloud-based infrastructure, hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS). As the data controller, CLEAR manages all storage, protection, and retention in accordance with its Members Terms and Privacy Policy.

Users maintain full control over their information and may access or permanently delete their data at any time by contacting privacy@clearme.com or submitting a request through CLEAR's privacy portal.

For University of Miami workforce use cases, no CLEAR Data is stored by University of Miami. CLEAR Members consent to share their PII to facilitate user matching by University of Miami. University of Miami does not store that PII.

  • Does CLEAR share any data with external vendors or government agencies?

CLEAR does not share or sell personal or biometric data with external vendors or government agencies. The only third-party entity involved in data handling is Amazon Web Services (AWS), which securely hosts CLEAR's systems.

CLEAR only shares data with partners when a user has explicitly authorized the transfer for a specific purpose. Each partner receives only the data fields necessary for their approved and consented use case.

CLEAR aims to share the minimum necessary data needed for a use case based on a partner's need. CLEAR's platform is configurable to share different PII per use case (e.g., name/DOB/address/phone # for account creation, name/DOB for password reset) and ultimately the partner may choose what data CLEAR shares with them so the partner has the opportunity to limit the data that is shared.

  • Is there any cost associated with using CLEAR?

No. CLEAR for University of Miami password reset is available for use at no cost to you.

  • Does this mean I can skip the line at airport security (CLEAR Plus)?

No, CLEAR identity proofing is not the same as CLEAR Plus, which allows you to move faster through airport security in designated CLEAR lanes.

  • If I already have CLEAR Plus, do I need to register with CLEAR for my University of Miami account?

Yes, but your experience will be as simple as snapping a selfie! As an existing CLEAR Plus Member, all you need to do is enter your phone number and snap a selfie to complete the facial verification.
