Canvas Fall 2025 – Early Adopters Guide

Supporting You in Teaching with Canvas This Fall

Welcome! Thank you for stepping into Canvas early. This guide is here to ensure you have what you need—from logging in, to course migration, to third-party tools and support.

What is an Early Adopter?

Faculty who volunteered to teach on Canvas in Fall 2025 are considered early adopters. Many of you have prior Canvas experience or participated in UM’s Canvas pilot. If you're ready and comfortable using Canvas, you can start exploring right away.

Accessing Canvas

Log in to Canvas at canvas.miami.edu with your University of Miami credentials.

  • All active faculty can log in to Canvas to begin course preparation.
  • New faculty will receive access approximately three (3) days after their official start date.

Your Fall 2025 Courses on Canvas

Starting August 1, 2025:

  • All Fall 2025 courses will appear in both Blackboard and Canvas.
  • CaneLink-linked sections will appear on your Canvas Dashboard and are the official course shells with student enrollments.
  • Courses migrated from Blackboard will be labeled "MIGRATED" and are for content-only use.

Migration Support & Course Setup

Course Migration Support (Through August 25)

The Learning Platforms Helpdesk will assist with Blackboard course content migration through August 25, 2025. After this date, external vendors will support large-scale migrations.

Sandbox Access

All faculty have access to a sandbox course—a private space to explore Canvas features and build content before publishing.

Moving Content Between Courses

Importing content from Blackboard:

  • You can download content from Blackboard, and upload into your live Canvas course.
  • Alternatively, can export your course from Blackboard, using the export tool in Original or Ultra courses.

Once content is migrated:

Course Merging and Organization

  • Courses that are cross-listed in CaneLink will be automatically merged in Canvas.
  • For custom merges or course augment requests, contact the Learning Platforms Helpdesk.

Checklist: Review Your Migrated Course

Please review your migrated Canvas courses for the following common issues:

  • Availability dates may be missing (Assignments, Discussions, Quizzes).
  • Module settings (requirements, availability, prerequisites) may not import.
  • Discussion grading settings often do not transfer.
  • SCORM activities, Journals, and Blogs are not imported.
  • The grade scale may not be set correctly.
  • Duplicate items may appear (e.g., “-2”, “-3”).
  • Quiz descriptions or settings may be incomplete.
  • The Syllabus page may be blank.
  • Quiz questions may need review (embedded images, formulas, dropdowns, etc.).

Third-Party Tool Availability

Please keep in mind that some tools are already available in Canvas, some will be ready for Fall 2025, and others are not yet supported.
