Box will be upgraded June 30, 2021 - Introducing New User Interface and Collections

Box, one of the University’s cloud storage tools, will be upgraded to a new web experience on Wednesday, June 30, 2021. This upgrade includes benefits such as faster load times for pages, search, and previews as well as promoting efficiency with easier content navigation, access, and organization. No action is required on your part to experience this upgrade.

New Web User Interface (UI)
The new web UI is a rich -- yet simplified -- experience enabling you to effortlessly organize, access, and work with your most important content. With the new web experience, you have the ability to cut through the noise and easily navigate to content with a clear, simple experience that is personalized to the way you prefer to work.

Introducing Box Collections
Box Collections enables you to create and name private collections of content in your Box account, where you can organize files and folders that you own or share. And although the content may be shared, your collections are not shared and are visible only to you.

Using Box Collections, you can:

  • Intuitively organize your Box content into logical groupings of your choice.
  • Name groupings to provide clear and meaningful context.
  • Quickly find the content you need right now.

Launched: The General Availability of Box Drive is Finally Here!

We're excited to announce that the much anticipated general availability of Box Drive is finally here! Box Drive is our desktop app that makes it incredibly easy to work with all of your files — even billions of files — right from your desktop, without using up much hard drive space.

Sharing Update: Inviting Collaborators to Edit Individual Files

To make it easier than ever to invite someone to edit a file, Box has officially launched the ability to 'invite collaborators' to individual files (previously collaborators could only be invited at the folder level)!

To invite a collaborator into a single file: 
  • Open the folder in which the file is located.
  • Right click the file or click the ellipses (...) to open the More Options menu.
  • Click Share.
  • Select Invite Collaborators

  • Once you have invited collaborators to the file, the Collaborator badge will be displayed beside the file's name.

Notes

  • When inviting collaborators to a single file, the only available access level is Editor. Users can change this access level to Viewer from the Manage Collaborators page. These are the only access levels available for collaborators on a single file. 
  • If you are a collaborator on a file only and not the parent folder, Box Edit will not be able to open the file This issue will be resolved in a future release. As a workaround, please request to be added as a collaborator on the file's folder in order to open the file using Box Edit.

Coming Soon: Enhanced Sidebar

Box is updating the left sidebar of the Web App to be even more useful and personalized than ever. This release includes a visual revamp of the sidebar, simplification of options (moving Collaborators page link to the avatar menu in header), and adding a full list of the user’s Favorites into the sidebar itself, making it even easier for users to access the content they care about most.

Coming Soon: Displaying Presence (Recent Activity) on All File Types

Late last year, Box added the ability to quickly see who’s looked at or edited a Box Note recently with the Presence feature, displaying user avatars in the header of Notes. In this update, we’re bringing a similar experience to the Box Web App for all file types. Users, with permission, will see avatars in the header of the Preview page whenever other users have recently previewed, edited, or commented on that file.

Deprecation: TLS 1.0

On June 15, 2018, Box will disable the TLS 1.0 encryption protocol for all customers and continue to support TLS 1.1 and higher, which Box already supports. This will impact anyone still using TLS 1.0 to connect to any Box service, including Box webapp, Box Sync, and APIs.

  • You can check if your browser supports TLS 1.1+ here.
  • Ensure you have upgraded to a supported browser before June 15, 2018.

Here is some information to help you plan for the upcoming change:

What is TLS?
  • TLS stands for "Transport Layer Security." It is a protocol that provides privacy and data integrity between two communicating applications. It’s the most widely deployed security protocol used today, and is used for web browsers and other applications that require data to be securely exchanged over a network. TLS ensures that a connection to a remote endpoint is the intended endpoint through encryption and endpoint identity verification. The versions of TLS, to date, are TLS 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2.
  • Box web and API connections, along with applications such as Box Sync and 3rd party apps, use TLS as a key component of their security. 
Why is TLS 1.0 being Disabled?
  • Box is requiring an upgrade to TLS 1.1 or higher in order to align with industry best practices for security and data integrity. Box is focused on continually helping our customers improve their security by using the latest security protocols. In early 2018, Box will require TLS 1.1 and later encryption protocol in an effort to maintain the highest security standards and promote the safety of customer data.

TLS 1.1+ Compliant Box Desktop Applications:

Box desktop products have been updated to meet the TLS 1.1+ compliance.  In order to be in compliance, you must be on the minimum versions below on both Mac and Windows machines. Additionally, all Windows machines must be on .NET 4.5.2 or higher in order for desktop applications to continue to work after the TLS 1.0 deprecation on June 15th, 2018.

Introducing the Box Drive Application

On August 14, 2017, Box Drive, Box's new desktop application, will be available to all University of Miami faculty, staff, and students. Box Drive is similar to Box Sync, but with the following key improvements:

  • You can search your entire Box account without ever opening an Internet browser.
  • You can view your entire Box folder tree on your desktop (whereas with Box Sync, you can only choose specific files and folders to sync between Box and your desktop).
  • You don't have to mark files for syncing – all of your Box files will be accessible through Windows Explorer or Mac Finder.
  • Files don't take up space on your computer – they are simply streamed down from Box when you open them.

To get started, please download Box Drive for your device (Windows or Mac) anytime after August 14. (Note: If you have Box Sync installed on your device, you’ll need to first uninstall Box Sync before installing Box Drive.)

Box + Microsoft Teams: A Seamless Way to Work in the Cloud

Today there are billions of Microsoft Office files in Box - that's a lot of Word documents, Excel sheets and PowerPoint presentations! With this new integration, joint customers will now be able to access and share their content in Box from within Teams, creating one central hub for productivity and collaboration.

By bringing content from Box into Teams, organizations can share their files more easily and collaborate on projects in real-time, all while keeping their content securely managed in Box. With Box as the central cloud content management platform, admins can protect files wherever they go with robust security controls and reporting, customer-managed encryption, rights management, and mobile security. And end users can work closely with anyone inside or outside the organization and keep sensitive files secure with granular user permissions.

Today’s update extends the reach of Box’s powerful integrations with Office on desktop, on mobile and online and demonstrates our commitment to further interoperability, making it easy for teams to work on content from anywhere. We’re excited to continue to partner more closely with Microsoft to power the future of work.


Introducing Box Excel Online Previewer

June 22, 2017 - The Box Excel Online Previewer allows you to preview your excel spreadsheets directly from within Box's preview window. We've integrated Microsoft's new Excel previewer technology into Box, meaning you can now flip between Excel sheets, search for specific cells, and sort content, all without ever downloading the file or opening Excel.

Notes:

  • The Box Excel Online Previewer only supports the .xlsx file type.
  • Administrators can enable or disable this app for their entire enterprise. If you have installed the app and are unable to use it, check with your administrator.

 

 


Box: The New Experience

May 19, 2017 - Box is getting a user interface update! On July 10, 2017, the Box upgrade will be available to everyone. If you'd like to check out the new style before then, you can opt-in to begin using the new user interface by clicking on the pop-up screen when you log in to Box (box.miami.edu).

Using Tags in Box

May 18, 2017 - When using Box (box.miami.edu), tags allow you to mark, sort, and easily search for related files. Once tags are enabled, you will have the ability to filter and search for files based on shared tags.

Tagging Items in Box

To tag an item:

  • Hover over the item you would like to tag, then click the ellipses (...) to open the More Options menu. Alternatively, you can right-click the item. Under More Actions, click Add or Edit Tags.

  • In the pop-up window, enter the tags you would like to add to this item. You can add multiple tags, seperated by a comma. Click Save once you are done.

  • Tags will be displayed below an item's name:

 

 

Searching and Filtering with Tags

To search for all files with a specific tag, simply click the tag below a file's name:

You can also filter by tags in any search by using the tags filter. Click the tags filter and enter the tag(s) you'd like to filter by.

 


Box Access via Internet Explorer 9 and 10 will be Blocked in May 2017

April 14, 2017 - Last year on September 26, 2016, Box discontinued support for Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) & 10 (IE10), including any version of compatibility mode that represents IE9 or IE10, in alignment with Microsoft's support cycle for these products. This means that usage of these browsers poses a security risk since these browsers will no longer receive security updates from Microsoft.

Why did Box decide to end support for Internet Explorer 9 and 10 (IE9 and IE10)?

  • As of January 12, 2016, Microsoft stopped supporting IE browsers 9 and 10 for the Windows operating systems that Box supports (Windows 7, Windows 8 (64-bit only) and Windows 10) and will no longer release security updates making these browsers vulnerable to attacks. (e.g. IE9 doesn't support policies such as CSP). Microsoft supports Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) on Windows 7 and Windows 8 and Microsoft Edge on Windows 10.
  • Maintaining backwards compatibility with much older technologies hinders Box's ability to innovate and use the best technologies available today.
  • Box is unable to provide a quality preview experience to all users because IE9 doesn't support new libraries such as PDF.js.
  • Box is unable to provide quick and responsive UI to IE9 users for lack of support with CSS transitions and animations, form validation, and more.

How did Box communicate the change to users and admins?

  • An email was sent to Box admins and co-admins on a quarterly basis since the original announcement.
  • There has been a standing notice on the Box Community deprecations page and browser policy page.
  • All users who try to access Box on either of these unsupported browsers (including on the associated compatibility modes for these browsers) will see an in-app banner notifying them that they are no longer using a supported browser and need to upgrade. This started happening early February 2017.
  • Last, users who try to access Box on either of these unsupported browsers (including on the associated compatibility modes for these browsers and/or if IE11 is manually set to run as IE9 or IE10) will be blocked entirely from Box until they have upgraded to a supported browser. This will happen early May 2017.
