Description

CaneNet is the University of Miami's wired and wireless student network:

  • The CaneNet Wireless network is available for students only. CaneNet wireless provides encryption for wireless communications, making it safer to use wireless devices, such as laptops, smartphones, and tablets.
  • The CaneNet Wired network is available in the Residential Colleges and the University Village. Ethernet ports in every room provide fast and reliable internet connections for those students living in these residential communities. Students with a valid CaneID and password can easily authenticate and use this service to surf the Internet, check email, and much more from their room. All that is needed is a computer with an Ethernet port – or Ethernet adapter (such as a Thunderbolt) – and an Ethernet cable.
    • Note: Devices that are not capable of authenticating automatically via CaneNet Wired – such as gaming consoles, televisions, and streaming devices – will need to be registered via the Network Device Registration Portal. Instructions on how to register those devices can be found here: DIY Networking.

Get It Here

  • CaneNet Wireless: To access the CaneNet Wireless network, enter your CaneID and password (the same way you previously connected to SecureCanes). You will only be asked to join this network and enter your credentials once, but if you change or reset your password you will need to reconnect with your updated credentials.
  • CaneNet Wired: For laptops and desktop computers, simply plug the Ethernet port in your room into the Ethernet port or adapter on your device. Then, enter your CaneID and password when prompted. Peripheral devices (such as a computer mouse or keyboard) can connect to the network after you register their MAC addresses. If you need help finding your MAC address, please contact the Student Technology Help Desk at (305) 284-8887 or sthd@miami.edu Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. or contact the UMIT Service Desk at (305) 284-6565 or help@miami.edu 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
