What Is My Userid?
Before you are able to use any of the University's computer systems, you must
first get your userid. This handout will show you how to accomplish this task.
This guide mainly pertains to students needing to get a userid for their
classes. If your computer userid is being authorized by your department, you
can choose what your userid will be.
| Note: |
This typestyle will be used for things that the computer
displays.
This typestyle will be used for things that you must type in. |
To find out what your userid is, you will use the USERID Processor. This is a
simple program which will ask you a few questions and then give you your
userid. The USERID Processor is located on the University's OpenVMS System. It
will give you the correct userid for any of IT's systems. The following will
show you how to gain access to this system.
In the ISF Computer lab you will see this menu:
Welcome to the ISF Computer Lab
<1> IBM/CMS (VM/CMS)
<2> GABLES OpenVMS
<3> Jaguar (Unix)
<4> Student Integrated System
<5> Library
<6> EASY
<7> SCICS
<8> Local Prompt
Enter Choice:
If you do not see the above menu, but see this on the screen
Local -011- Session 1 disconnected from xxxxx
Enter To Continue>
Press [RETURN] and you should see the menu.
If you see anything else on the screen like VM/ESA or SCICS etc. Press the
[DO] key and the [F14]
key.
From the menu, type option 2 for OpenVMS and press
[RETURN].
| Note: |
To use the Userid Processor through a modem, you will need to set
your communications program as follows:
Eight (8) data bits
No parity
One (1) stop bit
For up to 14400 baud the number to call to connect is:
284-6010.
For 28800 baud only the number to call to connect is:
284-6700
If you are using a low speed modem your response will be better if you turn off
both buffering and data compression on your modem. |
Once a connection is made via modem, press [ENTER] and
you should see the following prompt:
Local>
At the Local> prompt, type the letter c to connect, and it will
automatically default to the OpenVMS system.
Local> c [RETURN]
If
the connection was made, the system will inform you of this with something
similar to this message:
Local -010- Session 1 to Gables established
If the connection process was successful, the system will now display this:
University of Miami (IT) VAX 4000-600 VMS x.x
Username:
To get to the userid processor type USERNAME at the prompt:
Username: USERNAME (Press the
[RETURN] key)
The system will now ask you a series of questions. Type in the answer to each
question. At the end of each answer, make sure you press the
[RETURN] key. When you reach the end of the questions,
the system will then display your userid. Make sure you write your userid down
somewhere as this is the only way you will be able to access your files on the
computer. It is also used to identify any printouts that you may have.
Here is an example on how to use the USERID Processor. Remember that every
answer must be followed by pressing the [RETURN]
key.
Username: USERNAME
This processor will display your Username.
Please enter your U.M. ID number (eg. 123456789): 123456789
Is this for a class USERID ( Y or N ): Y
Please enter your course and number (eg. CSC100): MTH517
Your USERID is: ZCVYV913
When
you have finished using the USERID Processor, the system will automatically log
you off and return you to the Local> prompt. Type in
lo and press the [RETURN]
key. If you are unsure as to how to access the computer that you want there are
handouts that will help you.
| Note: |
The Userid Processor is designed to give out userids only. It
does not assure that your account has been created or is currently active. The
first time that you use your userid, your password will be the last four (4)
digits of your student number followed by the first two (2) letters of your
last name. |
